Members of the Milita Odisha Nisha Nibaran Abhiyan on Saturday staged picketing at various places in the city demanding a complete ban on liquor sale in the State.
While many resorted to picketing on foot, many others staged a motorcycle rally to protest rampant sale of liquor both through licenced wine shops and illegal vendors on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary.
They alleged that the Government is spoiling lives of lakhs of people and damaging peace in their families in the name of earning revenue and checking illegal liquor sale.
“Former Chief Minister Nabakrushna Choudhury had brought in legislation for complete ban on liquor sale in the State in 1956. We want the legislation be implemented soon in the State,” they demanded.
The picketing and rally were conducted peacefully with activists holding placards and posters with anti-liquor messages at Master Canteen, Station Bazaar, Rajmahal and Kalpana Square.
