In a shocking incident, a team from Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday nabbed a junior engineer of Jharkhand Urja Vikas Nigam limited (JUVNl) at Mosabani in Ghatshila while taking bribe from a customer.
The junior engineer identified as Rafique Alam was posted at the JUVNl's Ghatshila sub-division. He was caught while accepting Rs 4,000 from one Vimal Agrawal at Mosabani in the Ghatshila sub-division this morning.
Alam (32) who stays at a Ghatshila-based lodge was nabbed by the ACB team at DVC power sub-station office in Mosabani where the bribe was being accepted at 11:30 am.
Deputy superintendent of police, ACB, Jamshedpur bureau, Amar Pandey said Agrawal who is a resident of Ghatshila has set up a play-school at Galudih. He wanted to get a power connection to his play-school named Sand-fort Play School.
"As per our investigation Agrawal had applied for the power connection for his play-school at the JUVNl's Ghatshila office recently, but Alam who was assigned to process the application and recommend for the power connection demanded Rs 10,000 from him.
Finally, the deal was fixed at Rs 4,000 which was supposed to be handed over to the junior engineer at the DVC sub-station office in Mosabani," said Pandey.
The DSP, ACB said that Agrawal had already registered a verbal complaint about the junior engineer's demand for providing the power connection, but after deal was fixed, he submitted a written complaint with the ACB office in Sonari.
"We made a plan to nab the culprit red-handed. So we smeared a chemical in the bundle of 100 rupees notes which was to be handed over to Alam, as the complainant handed over the bundle of notes to the junior engineer, the ACB team which was around entered the DVC office and nabbed the junior engineer," Pandey said.
He pointed out that they plunged the right hand of the accused in water, which turned red due to the chemical effect and soon afterward they arrested the JUVNl official.
Alam has been taken away to the ACB headquarters in Ranchi. Meanwhile, superintending engineer, Jamshedpur circle, JUVNl, RB Mishra confirmed that he was aware about the arrest by the ACB team.
"We are aware of the development and it is a matter of shame that an officer of our organisation was arrested while taking bribe," said Mishra.
He said the guilty junior engineer should be punished sternly for misusing his power.
