Gambling on Diwali night might be considered by many to bring good luck for rest of the year, but this year it is going to bring bad luck for those Police Station In-charge’s in city, under which as many as 32 gamblers have been arrested so far. Senior police officials have said that those Police Station In-Charge under which a gambler is held, would feel the music.
Ranchi police have started identifying possible gambling spots in the city to put an end to the practise. “We will be keeping close eyes on locations most popular among gamblers and would arrest anyone found involved in such illegal practice. We have detained as many as 32 gamblers on Friday and Saturday from different parts of the city,” said City SP Kishore Kaushal.
He added that 14 people arrested on Friday included nine from Chutiya area, and five from Hinu area. “Many of those arrested from Chutia have been identified repeated offenders, which always remain on our radar. Ironically, one among them had already lost more than 70,000 of rupees in gambling, despite having no sound financial family background. The bigger challenge is that such people may get involved in any kind of crime to get their loss compensated,” added Kaushal.
The Police said that as many as 18 persons were arrested with gambling charges on Friday and were sent to judicial custody. They were arrested from Jagannathpur area. “Even after strict instructions from us to Police Station In-Charge that they would be held responsible, these activities took place. So, all the Station In-Charge of those stations under which these gamblers have been held, would face the action,” said Kaushal.
He said that the department was acting swiftly on reports of gambling activities it used to receive from many sources including its informer network. Police forces deployed at crucial points of the city for Dhanteras on Friday also bore fruit. “We have deployed sufficient number of policemen near jewellery stores, major shopping areas, economic establishments and banks as these places see an increase in bulk of transaction on the day of Dhanteras. Considering this factor, most of the police force is on the streets to prevent any untowardly incident from ruining the festive spirit,” the City SP said.
He said that areas with a number hotels around, market places and already identified locations remained on the police radar, as the gambling activities were only to increase on Sunday, the Diwali day.
