Three women were killed and three others critically injured when a car ran over them near the Gania Tehsil office in Nayagarh district on Friday.
Reports said a speeding car hit the six women, all hailing from Katanga village, killing two of them on the spot and grievously injuring four others.
The injured were admitted to the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital, where another woman succumbed to her injuries, taking the death toll to three.
The accident took place when the women were returning home after harvesting paddy.
Police detained the car driver for questioning besides seizing the vehicle.
Tension gripped the spot following the incident as irate locals staged a road blockade on the Gania-Kantilo road demanding compensation for the family members of the deceased.
