NHRC asks OHRC for probe, action

Thursday, 31 March 2016 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) to probe a case where students are being forced to use bamboo stick and rope wire to cross river to reach school.

“Students of five villages are going to school by crossing the river using bamboo stick and rope wire in Simanbadi gram panchayat under Daringbadi block in Phulbani district. It violates the human rights of the students,” petitioner Sangita Swain of Human Rights Watch said.

“This is happening due to inaction/unlawful action by the public authorities as they failed to construct a bridge,” the petitioner alleged.

The petitioner had urged the commission to take necessary steps to construct a bridge and a proper road to the village.

As the matter was a State subject the NHRC directed the OHRC to probe the allegation with an appeal to dispose of the case in accordance with law.
