A woman was gangraped inside a moving vehicle in the wee hours of Monday, police said. The incident took place at Sector V of upmarket Salt lake city, on the north-eastern fringes of Kolkata. The woman, a bar singer who was still in shock, told the police that she had taken a rented vehicle from Baguiati in north Kolkata to Salk lake.
The vehicle dropped her at Sector V at around 11.30 pm. Even as she was walking towards her destination a second vehicle screeched to a halt besides her. "She was dragged inside the vehicle by its occupants" police said, adding the woman who was still traumatised and recuperating in Bidhannangar Sub-divisional Hospital was unable to identify her tormentors.
"She is very feeble and can barely talk," said a senior police officer. From her statement, the police gathered that there were four people inside the car. They raped her in turns even as the vehicle drove about and later dropped her near Sector V. Some morning-walkers found her in an unconscious state and reported the incident to the Bidhannagar Police.
"We have registered an FIR and are investigating the case," DCP KP Barui said, adding things will be clear when the girl is able to make a clearer statement. The police are trying to trace the vehicle from CCTV footage in the nearby areas, source said.
A similar incident had hit the national headlines in 2012 when a woman was dragged inside a car at Park Street and raped. Even as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had remained in a denial mode, calling the incident as a "stage-managed" one one of her party MPs termed it as a "matter between a woman and her clients" the police failed to trace the prime accused still remains at large.
Bengal has in the past few years witnessed a large number of gangrapes and the State today holds number one position in crimes against women.
