The Rhino Horn Verification Committee (RHVC) instituted by the Assam Government to authenticate and take stock of the number of horns of one-horned rhinos in the custody of the Assam forest department and different treasuries of the State on Tuesday stumbled upon one of the largest rhino horns in the world.
The RHVC members found while verifying the horns kept in the custody of the treasury at Nagaon district on Tuesday, the committee members said, adding that the particular rhino horn weighed 3.051 kg and its height is 36 cm. “The outer curvature length of the horn is 45 cm, inner curvature is 38 cm while the base circumference is 60 cm,” said the committee members while adding that the particular horn was found in Bagori range of the Kaziranga National Park in August 1982.
The committee members said that there is another horn of one-horned rhino at British Museum in london, which has the record height of 60 cm. “The horn kept in the British museum was recovered from Assam and it was kept in the museum since 1909. However, there is no mention of the weight of that horn,” the RHVC members said on Tuesday.
“The Committee on Tuesday verified 210 rhino horns, of which 206 were brought from Nagaon treasury, three from Jorhat treasury and one horn from Diphu treasury,” it said adding that the 22 horns kept in Morigaon treasury will be taken up for examination on Wednesday.
It may be mentioned here that the committee had already completed verifying the horns stored in the Golaghat and Mangaldai treasury. While the committee verified 1,195 rhino horns kept in Golaghat treasury, it found five fake rhino horns while verifying the 56 rhino horns kept in Mangaldai treasury. The Committee also did not open a box belonging to Sonitpur(West) division which is said to have contained three rhino horns because the box seal was found broken.
