Senior AI staff from North-East 'abused'

Friday, 30 September 2016 | Souvik Mitra | New Delhi

A senior manager of Air India SATS, hailing from the North-East, was discriminated, abused and threatened by the head of the transfers department of the same company at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), according to sources. The incident happened when she asked him for acknowledgement on a mail she had sent him. Police said an FIR regarding the matter was registered on Monday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, IGIA, Sanjay Bhatia confirmed the incident but did not disclose further information regarding the matter.

Police said the accused has been identified as Jorawar Singh, who is incharge of transfers at AISATS, a joint-venture between Air India limited and SATS limited which is a leading gateway services and food solutions provider in Asia.

According to the information, Air India had informed AISATS that there would be a system outage for three hours which would affect international and domestic flights. Regarding this, meetings were held with various stakeholders and various information were shared with all departments, including AISATS transfers department. Mails were sent to all departments regarding the matter.

“As decorum demands acknowledgements on the mails were received from all except from the in charge of AISATS transfers, Jorawar Singh. This was not for the first time. Because of past experience I thought it would safer to speak with him in person and ensure that he is aware of the situation and will take necessary action. When I called him and asked him to read my mails and acknowledge them, there was an outburst of dirty language and threats from him,” alleged the victim, who is in her fifties.

“The accused used discriminating words hurting her sentiments and even used nasty abuses and threatened to outrage her modesty,” said a police official.

“During my career spanning 32 years, I have never come across by someone like Jorawar. I could not rest or eat properly after the incident. There has been a history of discrimination and preconceived notions about our people which has led to sexual, mental and physical abuse of girls from the North-East,” alleged the victim.

The police official said on the basis of the woman’s complaint an FIR was registered and further investigations in the matter was initiated.
