Even as overnight showers brought relief to Delhiites from a more-than-usually-hot May weather, but it also brought traffic in the city to a crawl in the earlier part of the day. Water-logging was reported from various parts of Delhi that severely hit the traffic movement as many commuters complained of taking almost twice as much time to reach their destinations.
Traffic was heavy in the carriageway from Nehru Place towards Chirag Delhi due to water logging near Chirag Delhi Flyover in the morning hours, traffic officials had tweeted warning people to avoid the stretch. Water-logging was also reported near Qutab Minar metro station which slowed down the traffic passing through the stretch for several hours. Traffic in the carriageway from Palam towards NSG Red light was also brought to a stand-still due to water-logging in the area, traffic officials informed.
Traffic leading to nearby satellite towns of Noida, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad was also significantly slowed down, causing major woes to the commuters, most of them who were on their way to work. Deepak Malhotra, who works as Interglobe Enterprises in Gurgaon, said that he was late for work due to unusually high volume of traffic on the roads.
The worst-hit areas where commuters faced long tailbacks included Kashmere Gate ISBT, Shanti Path, Sardar Patel Marg, Dhaula Kuan, Delhi cantonment, Mehrauli-Badarpur road, Ring Road, IIT-flyover, South extension and Ashram crossing in south Delhi. Ring Road and the Outer Ring Road were also completely jam-packed.
