JNUSU to stage indefinite sit-in at Admin Block

Wednesday, 30 November 2016 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) on Tuesday decided to stage an indefinite sit-in at the Administration Block of the varsity, accusing JNU of scuttling the process of justice for missing student Najeeb Ahmad and depriving them of their protest space.

“Today, after getting no reply from the administration, the JNUSU has decided to go for indefinite sit-in at the admin block against scuttling of protest space and scuttling Justice in Najeeb’s case,” JNUSU President Mohit Pandey said in a statement.

Also, he gave a reply to a letter addressed to him by the Registrar of JNU on Monday, which had asked them to not stage any protest at the ad-block, citing trouble caused to the nearby residents and employees at the building. “Protest at the admin block has been a tradition of this university. We never saw such suppression of dissenting voices in the university. Bother focusing on the issue for which we are protesting,” Pandey said in his reply to Pramod Kumar, Registrar of the university.

“We will keep on protesting until we get justice for Najeeb,” he added. It has been 45 days since Ahmad has been missing after being beaten by a mob of students affiliated with the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), an RSS student wing. He was attacked by them at Mahi-Mandvi hostel on the campus on the intervening night of October 14-15, and went missing the next day.

Pandey also raised with the university the issue of not punishing those students, who assaulted Ahmad, even after being found guilty in the internal enquiry.
