Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar has been appointed as the member of University Grants Commission (UGC) by the Government of India. The university announced in an official statement on Wednesday.

“The Government of India has appointed Prof M Jagadesh Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University as a Member of University Grants Commission (UGC),” JNU, Public Relations Officer, Poonam Kudaisya said.

Prof Kumar, who earlier worked as a Professor at IIT Delhi, said, “Research and innovation are the backbone of any developed society. One way to motivate students to get interested in Science is to expose them to research at an early stage in their education. Universities should play a proactive role in strengthening their research programmes.”

Kumar was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the university in January this year. He was at the fore front of the administration in handling the crisis which unfolded after the controversial February 9 event on Parliament Attack convict Afzal Guru on the campus.

Massive group of JNU Students’ Union and Teachers’ Association accused the V-C of working in “hand in glove” with the Central Government which led to the witchhunt of students.

The V-C, however, said he will take JNU forward in terms of research and make it barrier free and borderless in the near further.
