With the arrest of nine robbers, including one absconding criminal, on Friday, Delhi Police crime branch claimed to have busted an inter-State gang of highway carjackers involved in more than 70 cases.
Also, the Delhi Police recovered 685 cartons of branded cigarettes worth Rs. 6.25 crores, seven robbed vehicles, three pistols including one robbed licensed pistol and two country made pistols and 13 live cartridges. The accused used to intercept commuters on highways while portraying themselves as police officers.
The accused were identified as Sunil, Deshraj, Vakil, Salman, Sazid, Danish, Surender, Mohammad Afsar and Dilshad Ahmed.
“The accused used beacon light on their vehicle while committing crime; they also used traffic regulating light bar to stop vehicles,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
The Delhi Police received several complaints relating to carjacking across places following which a team of police was constituted.
