Brain Stormer: Delhi: India's Crime Capital

With the latest report of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) released on Tuesday, Delhi has recorded alarming rate of criminal cases pertaining to theft, robbery, kidnapping and women. Delhi has witnessed a jump of 23 per cent over 2014 which is almost one case in every three minutes in 2015. Being the national capital, the Government must take full precaution for preventing criminal cases so that its citizens can lead a peaceful life. The most disturbing trend is that with around 72000 cases reported last year, incidents of theft increased by almost 30 per cent compared to year 2014.

Apart from this, even the Delhi police forces are not been able to nab the car thieves and finally leaving it to the responsibility of the owners only. With the sharp rise in number of cases against women like rape, molestation etc. it is increasingly becoming difficult for them to live, work and move out safely in the capital city.

Another disheartening reality of the capital crime scene is that most of the women-related cases committed by police personnel are either not pursued or at times not enquired properly. This is so because it is done by the same police officers of the department, hence many a times justice is not meted out to the womenfolk. Beyond this some senior police officers strongly feel that most of the cases against women are not registered at all and it adds more complexity to the whole issue. It is not a good sign.

Indeed all cases must be reported to the police. Then only the rising crime graph can be prevented. Else women will be always left to the mercy of the offenders and they will take advantage of the lax law and order situation of the capital. What must be done at the moment is that the criminal justice system must be reviewed once again and police force should be trained to offer 24X7 services in the grey zones in the city. It is felt that the city police is already overburdened and it needs an immediate revamp. It needs more manpower and women sensitive personnel for sure.
