Villagers live in fear as Devisaud dam begins to overflow

Friday, 31 July 2015 | Vinod Chamoli | NEW TEHRI

The hearts of villagers in Dilchi Gimri area are beating faster due to the rising level of the Tehri dam lake. like the previous years, the danger of being cut off from the rest of the State is hovering over at least 42 villages with the Devisaud dam beginning to overflow. Things are grim as the Devisaud motor bridge is yet to come up with construction still on despite lapse of the deadline.

The people residing in 42 villages in Dilchi Gimri area are cut off every year during the rainy season since 2006 as the  water level of  Tehri dam lake rises. The dam has become so fragile for three/four months every year that walking on it has also become dangerous. Now, the danger of being cut off is again hovering over them.

As rains continue  the level of Bhagirathi is on the rise due to which the lake’s water level is also rising. On Monday, the level reached 790 meter. Once it reaches 815m the bridge would submerge in the lake.  Things continuing this way for years, the villagers had demanded a new motor bridge. Construction had started in 2013. The bridge was to be completed in September 2014. But so far even the abutments of the bridge are not ready.
