To provide shop-rooms to roadside vendors, the newly-formed Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) with support of the district administration has started efforts for construction of vending zones in different parts of the town.
Demarcation of land for vending zones would be completed by the next month and shop-rooms would be constructed in one or two years, district Collector Balwant Singh told mediapersons here.
He too said once vending zones are constructed, the traffic problems in the city would be lessened to a large extent.
“Since the State Government wants roadside vendors are settled at special locations, the SMC has planned to create vending zones. The Municipal authorities, Tehsildar and roadside vendors will work jointly to make the project successful,” the Collector said. SMC Commissioner Trilochan Majhi said since there is acute shortage of Government land in the town, first phase of the vending zone would be constructed along the Dhobijor Nala.
Roadside vendors have appreciated the move of the district administration and the SMC to resolve this longstanding problem.
“Vending zones can solve the problems of the town and small businessmen,” said Sumitra Behera, a roadside vendor.
