UPCl tightens noose to catch 'power thieves', seven arrested

The Uttarakhand Power Corporation limited (UPCl) launched a drive against power theft in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts on Tuesday. Seven persons were caught for power theft in Bazpur division in Udham Singh Nagar and FIR was lodged against them in the police station concerned. In Haridwar district, five persons were caught for power theft in Gadhmirpur, Kaliyar and Teliwala areas of the district and FIR was lodged against them in the police station concerned. 

The vigilance team had severed the power connections and withdrew meters of six power consumers who had failed to clear their unpaid dues amounting in total to about `6.34 lakh. The defaulters were also served notices by the team.

The public was requested to inform UPCl on toll free number 1800-180-4185 between 10 am and 5 pm on any working day if they wish to report a case of power theft. The names of the persons who inform the department about power theft in their localities will be kept secret. They can also inform the department by fax on 0135-2760911. The persons who inform the officials about power theft in their localities will also be rewarded, said an official of UPCl.
