'Unauthorised red light use on vehicles an offence'

Those who use red light in their vehicles unauthorisedly are liable to punishment. The police and the Motor Vehicle Department officials can take action against them and also slap fine on them, said Transport Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi while answering to a question of Dilip Ray.The Minister presented a list of the special persons who can use red light in their vehicles as per law and instruction of the Supreme Court. They include Governor, Chief Minister, Chief Justice of High Court, Speaker, Cabinet Ministers, leader of Opposition and Judges of High Court. These dignitaries can use red light with flash. While only red light can be used by Deputy Speaker, Ministers of State and Advocate General.
 
Majhi said seven categories of special persons can use red light with flash while four categories of persons can only use red light. However, in the third case, eight categories of officials maintaining law and order and in emergency services can use amber light. DGP, Commandant General (Home Guard), DG (Fire service), IG, DIG, Commissioner of Police, Additional Commissioner of Police, DCP, RDC, District Collectors, Additional Collectors, Sub Divisional Magistrates and Executive Magistrates can use amber light. Vehicles on patrolling duty, PCR Vans, vehicles carrying forces to maintain law and order and fire tender vehicles can also use amber light.The Minister said that those who are authorised to use the three kinds of light in their vehicles can have them while inside the vehicles. Else, the lights are to be switched off and covered.
