The Hirakud Dam authorities on Sunday opened two sluice gates to release excess water.
While one gate was opened in morning, one more gate was opened in the afternoon due to heavy inflow of water into the reservoir from the upper catchment areas.
As on 3 pm on Sunday, the water level of the reservoir stood at 624.12 feet against maximum 630 feet.
Sources said rainfall in the upstream in the last 24 hours was recorded at 50.11 mm while 16.14 mm of rainfall was registered in the downstream.
