Scientists of the Agricultural Economics Department of the College of Agriculture of GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT) have forecast the price of tomato in the forthcoming season.
According to their estimate, the wholesale price of tomato will be in the range of Rs900 to Rs1,000 for a quintal between November 2015 and January 2016. The forecast has been made under the network project on market intelligence being undertaken by the Department.
The main objective of the project is to release price forecasts of selected agricultural commodities before sowing and during harvesting. The project team of Pantnagar centre under the supervision of Principal Investigator Dr Anil Kumar, conducted market survey of the regulated market in Haldwani, a major market for tomato in Uttarakhand, and analysed the wholesale price data of the last 12 years.
The econometric analysis indicated that the wholesale price of tomato in Haldwani market would be ranging between Rs900 and Rs1,000 per quintal from November 2015 to January 2016. This forecast is based on past data and model and the actual market price may not turn out to be the same as predicted. The agricultural scientists have advised farmers to take marketing and storage decisions for tomato according to price predicted.
