Three labourers die after inhaling toxic gas in UT

Three labourers on Saturday died after reportedly inhaling poisonous gas in the sewage trench during its cleaning process on Air Force Road near Kali Bari point in the morning here.

Police immediately arrested the contractor and registered a case against him under section 284 and 304 A of IPC and sent the bodies in the local hospital for postmortem, said Bachittar Singh, investigation officer.

He added that the deceased have been identified as Prem Pal, Daan Singh and Asharfi from Moradabad of Uttar Pradesh, who were engaged as labourer by private contractor for cleaning the sewage trench in Sector 47 area of Chandigarh for upcoming rainy season.

Police said, contractor had engaged four laborers who started cleaning the sewage trench but as fourth labourer saw that the three laborers’ fell in to gutter after inhaling the poisonous gas, he didn’t go inside the trench and immediately raised an alarm.

Chandigarh police immediately rushed to the spot and with the help of local fire brigade personnel took all the bodies out of the gutter.
