The Indira Gandhi National Manav Sangrahalaya organised cultural performances of north-east at ‘Kriti 2015’ craft fair-cum-demonstration fair. The visitors enjoyed the colourful performances of the North-east with shopping at the craft fair.
On the first day of three days’ dance festival performances commenced with ‘Maibi’ dance of Manipur. The second performance of the evening was ‘Rana Chandi’ dance by artists from Bodo tribe of Assam. After Bodos, Nepali community of Sikkim presented traditional ‘Maruni’ dance. The fourth performance was world famous Bihu Dance of Assam. later Kabui tribal dance of Manipur, Bagadumba dance of Assam and traditional dance of Sikkim were presented. The performance will continue on December 31 and January 01.
Maibi Dance - Maibi laiching Jagoi is one of the most popular festivals in the valley of Manipur mirrors the unique heritage of the Pre-Vaisnavite Tradition of Manipur. It is celebrated during the month of March and April every year. The lai Haraoba Dance led by the Maiba’s and the Maibi’s symbolised the creation of life and growth of civilization in a highly rhythmic and absorbing style and performed before the sylvan deity to bring peace and prosperity to the land.
Ranachandi Dance - This dance among the various form of Kherai dance of Bodo community. Here “Khe” means pray to God. Through this dance the people from Bodo Tribe established their God in a respective place with an object to worship before they proceed to a battle and hope to return with flying colours from war. In this dance only females participate with sword and shields in their hands.
Maruni Dance - Maruni is a traditional folk dance most popular among the Nepali community of Sikkim. In the days of yore, it was essentially played by male enacting the female character. later, female dancers have increasingly taken over the pivotal role of performing Maruni dance. Maruni dancers set ablaze the happy occasion with memorising the songs with resplendent gestures of dance. The movement of Maruni dance is extremely graceful and lyrical.
Bihu Dance- The most important festivals of Assam are the Bihus, celebrated with fun in abundance by all Assamese people irrespective of caste, creed, and belief. his joyous dance is performed by both young men and women, and is characterized by brisk dance steps, rapid hand movement, and a rhythmic swaying of the hips in order to represent youthful passion. Dancers wear traditionally colourful Assamese clothing.
