Assocham, the premier business conglomerate, has displayed dissatisfaction over lower contribution coming in the national gross domestic product from Jharkhand despite being a resourceful State. As per its recent findings, the State chips in with just 1.9 per cent of the GDP which was even lower than its figure in 2004-05.
“The State has not been successful at all in increasing its contribution to the national GDP. It contributes only 1.9 per cent to the Indian economy in 2013-14 which is even lower than the contribution of 2 per cent made in 2004-05. The trend needs to be dealt well on urgent basis and with the new dispensation coming at the helm we are looking forward in that direction,” said DS Rawat, secretary general of Assocham while addressing a press conference on Friday.
He also released a report on the State economy that that suggests preparations for meeting the needs and aspirations of growing population by addressing the constraints and bottlenecks coming in the way.
“Industrial share to the State GDP has seen a decline from 42 per cent in 2010-11 to 9.2 per cent in 2013-14. Poor performance of the secondary sector is because of very low growth in manufacturing and construction where growth rate has fallen from double digit to single digit. Even considerable decline in growth rate in mining has been recorded which is a big sign of worry,” added Rawat quoting the report findings.
Nevertheless, he expressed hope on the new Government and lauded some initiatives taken in the form of single window, infrastructure and law and order. “We are hopeful. Some start has been there. But this has to be converted into big strides. The Government of the day also needs to keep in mind the policy formulation and subtle shifts into that affect the investment scenario,” said he indicating towards coal block allocation cases.
