Security tightens for a peaceful New Year

Thursday, 31 December 2015 | PNS | Jamshedpur

The police have beefed up security in and around the city for New Year celebrations.

Extra forces will be deployed on picnic spots, restaurants, parks, shopping centres and in cinema halls, so that people can welcome the New Year 2016 peacefully.

Police have made special arrangements to counter any antisocial elements on picnic spots.

“We have deployed static force on the picnic spots to prevent eve teasing and loot, besides extra patrolling parties on the roads,” said an official.

Police in civil dress along with cops in uniform will be keeping a vigil on year-end revelry near picnic hotspots, restaurants and popular shopping complexes in city, till January 3 as part of ‘extended vigil’.

“We have issued directives to all the 17 urban police stations and Bodam police station (for Dimna) and Jadugora police station (Narwapahar) for the extended police vigil.

The deputy superintendent of traffic (Vivekananda Thakur) has been asked to ensure cops deployment on road from December 31 till January 3.

Earlier, police watch on New Year revelers crossing line in public places, was limited to mainly two days- December 31 and January 1.

However, this time the weekend extends till January 3 we have decided for the extended vigil,” said Jamshedpur city SP Chandan Jha.

During the ‘extended vigil’ apart from intensifying of police patrolling on roads and near popular restaurants and picnic spots this year the Mahila police station (situated in Sakchi police station campus) would be asked to deploy its women constables in civil dress at these spots.

Some of the popular picnic hotspots along with police stations, under which they fall, include Jubilee Park (jointly manned by Bistupur and Sakchi police station), Dimna lake (jointly manned by MGM and Bodam police station), Hudco lake (Telco), Domuhani (Sonari),  Narwapahar (Jadugora) and Bhetiya park (Kadma).

Traffic DSP Vivekananda Thakur said that cops would be pressed into service with special instruction to take action against rash driving.

“During this season eve-teasing cases register an increase at the picnic spots so the district women cell of the police has planned to work in coordination with the respective local police stations to prevent incidents of eve-teasing in the picnic spots,” said an official of the district women’s cell.

The policemen in plain clothes, with baton and torch will move around in the parks to guard the picnickers. In addition to this police patrolling will be increased at weekends at the park areas.

"We have also come to know that several vehicle owners are hoodwinking the police by using Press or police stickers.  As the cops who are engaged in  carrying out the arms-checking do not want indulge in unnecessary argument with the people having Press or Police tag on their vehicle, this has become a trick for the anti-socials to evade the police action in the guise of such stickers. But we will not allow any fake person to escape with the  stickers as mentioned above," said the police official.
