State Congress general secretary Anand Singh Rawat has urged the State Government to raise the alcohol consumption limit from the current 18 years to 21 years.Addressing the mediapersons here on Monday, the Congress leader informed that he had already written a letter to the State Chief Minister Harish Rawat and State Congress chief Kishore Upadhyay in this regard.
Rawat, also the son of the Chief Minister, said the minimum age for liquor consumption in Uttarakhand was 18 years due to which the youth were falling into the clutches of alcohol abuse at an age when they should be focusing on their higher education. “I have written to the Chief Minister and the PCC chief requesting that the minimum age limit for alcohol consumption be raised to 21 years due to the alarming rise in youngsters indulging in substance abuse. This is a social demand and the support of other political parties is also being sought to facilitate it.”
He further said that he had also met senior BJP State leader and former MlA Munna Singh Chauhan apart from the BJYM State head Saurabh Thapliyal seeking their cooperation in this effort. “The drive started by the police in Dehradun against substance abuse should be undertaken across the State,” he said.
