Anganwadi workers and bhojan matas (midday meal cooks in Government schools) held a demonstration in front of the State Secretariat in support of their demands on Saturday.
Under the banner of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) the workers assembled at the agitation site near Parade Ground and marched towards the Secretariat.
Holding placards and shouting slogans the workers demanded increase in stipend and immediate moratorium on the policy of their removal on one or other grounds.
The agitators were stopped near the Kanak Chowk by the police personnel where they squatted on a sit in.
The agitators said many Bhojan Matas working for last many years in the schools were removed on the plea the student strength of the schools was decreasing. The speakers said the Bhojan Matas were not responsible for drop in number of students. They demanded that the Bhojan Matas who were removed should be reinstated immediately; otherwise they would be forced to intensify their agitation in coming days. The Anganwadi workers also demanded increase in the stipend provided to them.
