The Indian Prosthodontic Society (IPS), a pioneer body of expert dentists which deals with treatment of complex dental diseases as well as dental implants, would open its Odisha branch at the IMS near the Sum Hospital here on Saturday. Prosthodontics, also known as dental prosthetics or prosthetic dentistry, is the area of dentistry that focuses on dental prostheses.
Trained prosthodontists treat complex cases, full-mouth rehabilitation, TMJ-related disorders, congenital disorders of head and neck and sleep apnea by planning and fabricating various prostheses. A prosthodontist also deals with the most advanced treatment available for dental implants, an IPS release informed. The IPS is now emerging to play a leading role in promoting total prosthodontic rehabilitation in the country.
The release said prosthodontists of Odisha have started an exclusive club to propagate the activities of IPS in the State as preponderance of various habits in the local population has deteriorated oral health care. IPS Odisha barnch is aimed at bringing the latest developments of dental science, particularly in the field of prosthodontics, to the public arena to help increase awareness towards oral rehabilitation.
As part of this movement, the branch would organise at least 3 cutting edge scientific progarammes every year. While one programme would deal with a topic for general practitioners, the second would focus on a prosthodontic topic and the third would be a topic dealing with prosthodontic laboratory procedures. Apart from scientific programmes, the IPS Odisha branch proposes to conduct public health programmes in its endeavour to reach out to the common man. The IPS was first constituted in the country by a team of three doctors Dr TM Udani, Dr FD Mirza and Dr K Bhargava.
