Power crisis in Jamshedpur, storm plays spoil sport

Several areas under Jharkhand Urja Vikas Nigam limited (JUVNl) faced power pangs following heavy storm in the evening on Wednesday. The power crisis worsened in almost all areas under JUVNl following the Nor’wester storm which resulted in disruption of services.

The power lines snapped at the sub-stations at several places including Ulliyan in Kadma and Karandih affecting power supply. To make matters worse, branches of trees fell on the overhead electricity wires at several places during the Nor’wester, resulting in further disruption.

Places like Sonari, Sundernagar, Karandih, and Parsudih which has JUVNl supply was also confronting with power woes for the third consecutive day. A total of 11 electricity poles were damaged at Sonari while eight poles were damaged at Adityapur in the storm. Electricity poles also fell at places like Baridih and Govindpur leading to disruption in power supply.

Residents of Adityapur, Mango and several other places serviced by JUVNl also complained of intermittent power cuts and loadsheddings for long duration.The storm also damaged three transformers at Sonari and two transformers each in Ichagarh and Potka respectively. Numerous street lamps were also damaged at the Dimna Road and other thoroughfares in the city.

General manager of JUVNl AP Singh said that the storm affected almost all the power supply network of JUVNl. Engineers and other officials are on the job.

JUVNl officials admitted that several areas under the board are facing acute power crisis due to the storm “The storm has snapped the power supply in several areas. A few days back similar situation prevailed. Our team members are at work. We hope to restore power supply by tonight,” said the official. 

The officials, however, said that the Central load Despatch ( ClD) was supplying full load to both the power grid sub-stations at Golmuri and Gamharia.
