A woman was killed and three other persons were injured after a cooking gas cylinder exploded at the OUAT colony quarters at Unit-8 here on Wednesday.
Chandramani Nayak, an employee at the State-run Odisha University of Agriculture Technology (OUAT), was injured while his wife died on the spot. Nayak’s son-in-law and a neighbour sustained critical burn injuries and were admitted at a private hospital.
Nayak, his wife, mother, daughter and son-in-law as well as their two daughters were present in the house during the accident, in Unit-8 area.
The nine-year old daughter of Nayak and his mother, however, escaped the accident narrowly.
The fire probably caught by a gas leakage in the cylinder, suspected fire tender officials.
The fire officials struggled for an hour to douse the flame. They had to cut open the iron grills to rescue people out of the house.
While the wife Nayak died on the spot, his son-in-law sustained serious injuries in his leg in the accident. Though he was first rushed to the Capital hospital but was later shifted to a city-based private hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Nayak and other injured were admitted at the Capital Hospital with burn injuries.
