NSD artists struggle to revive theatre culture

Monday, 30 November 2015 | PNS | Ranchi

Jharkhand is known for its vivid art and cultural activities. But unfortunately one of the most realistic arts forms -- ‘theatre’ is losing its significance among the denizens in the city. lack of awareness among people and government’s apathy are mainly responsible for it. In order to boost theatre culture in the city which was earlier only prevalent in metropolitan cities, few groups residing in the state capital are trying hard to revive theatre culture. One such group belonging to Kranti Krishna Kala Bhawan has been organizing theatre shows on social various issues.

However, artists associated with the theatre group are trying all possible means to provide platforms to all those who are interested in the art form but have no means to promote it. National School of Drama alma mater and senior theatre artist Rishikesh lal said, “We do not receive any support from the state government to promote the theatre culture in the state. We all artists here make all necessary arrangement for the shows. Since 2003, we are active and so far we have received no support from the Government side.”

Citing details about the theatre journey lal further added, “My entire family is associated with the theatre and presently 50 people are involved with us. Till 2008 we performed as ‘Meghdoot’ theatre group at rented house but did not receive good response from the landlord. Then finally I converted my house into theatre.”

Though artists focuses on the relevant contemporary issues still only people associated with the art form regularly visit the theatre. Kranti Krishna Kala Bhawan is the only place in the state capital which organizes theatre shows regularly on every Sunday. No financial assistance so far received is received by any individual or institutions.

Giving details about the source of livelihood lal said, “I basically earn my livelihood from my business which is selling lights and other artistic equipments. I am also associated with the Doordarshan Krishi Darshan programme. My 50 percent income is spent in all these theatre work and moreover I receive support from my family members so it is easy for me to manage things.”

lal family is associated with art and culture since ages and most of them were either associated with music or theatre. “My ancestors have been associated with music and have performed at different cities in India,” added lal.

The group conducts regular shows outside the state and has received appreciation and prize for their performances. Currently, the group has performed at All India Drama Festival organised in Jamshedpur and have received first prize defeating various theatre groups from different parts of India. Every year these theatre artists conduct 10 to 15 shows outside the State.

Promoting the art form through various medium is another big challenge for the theatre artists. However, in the age of information and communication technology, various social media platforms have made the work easier for the artists and has emerged as one the biggest tools for promotion.
