The carcass of an elephant calf aged about eight months was found in Bauda-Banakhandi forest under the Athagarh forest range area on Wednesday evening. Forest officials suspected that calf had died 4-5 days ago due to some disease.
Ranger Goura Gopal said most of internal parts of the body were damaged due to prolong ailment, and the calf was aloof from its herd for over a month.
However, locals said the jumbo calf could have been saved if elephant watchers and forest officials were doing their duties properly.
