Chief Secretary GC Pati has directed officials to post details of cases of those involved in the chit fund scam in public domain for sensitising general public.
He has also asked the officials to publicise the cases registered under the Odisha Protection of Interest of Depositors (in Financial Establishments) Act.
The directive was issued at a State-level Coordination Committee meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary and attended by RBI, SEBI, and State Finance Department officials.
As per the decision, the Government would intensify the ongoing campaign against illegal money laundering indulged in by some companies luring gullible investors.
RBI Regional Director PK Jena outlined the issues for discussion while Crime Branch ADG BK Sharma put forth updates on the cases registered against the chit fund companies.
The discussions revealed that so far 19 cases have been booked and put to trial. Out of these, convictions were made in six cases. The State-level Coordination Committee has been formed to keep a watch over the nonbanking companies (NBCs) raising illegal money from the public.
An Inter-State organisation has also started functioning to coordinate among various enforcement agencies, investigators and regulatory bodies in various States.
The Chief Secretary advised the Finance and Information & Public Relation Departments to prepare posters, frequently asked questions (FAQ) and wall posters for public awareness. The Cooperation Department was asked to organise training programmes for cooperative societies, banks and officials to create awareness about illegal money collection rackets.
