How cops nab looters, but not thieves

Friday, 31 July 2015 | PNS | Gwalior

The district police have been successfully catching looters, dacoits and gangsters but are facing problems with the vehicle lifters!

The police have solved 60 per cent cases of sensitive nature but could only recover five to 11 per cent of the stolen vehicles. The incidents of vehicle theft had stopped for some days due to police checking but afterward it has started again.

Most of the vehicle thefts took place in 2012 when 1605 vehicles were stolen. Of them, the police could recover only 180 vehicles so far. At the same time, the police succeeded in solving 60 to 75 per cent cases of loot and dacoity. The vehicle lifters, whoever arrested in the past told police they kept an eye on the places where the people stayed for a long time. They committed thefts in the parks, outside offices, near about shopping malls and busy market. They also remained active near coaching centers. During the checking, they kept stolen vehicles at railway station, bus stand and other parking lots where they could hide the vehicle easily and later on they took them away.

The favourite places for the vehicle lifters’ gangs had been Phoolbag, Jalvihar, Italian Garden, Jaindraganj, Thatipur, Hazira, JA hospital, City Center, Nai Sarak and Baradari.

SP Gwalior Hari Narian Chari Mishra said that the vehicle theft is a challenge for the police. Efforts are being made to check them. Old vehicle thieves have been caught and they are being grilled and police officials are hopeful to get some vital clues.
