Historic Almora jail to become museum

Monday, 31 August 2015 | Rajendra S Markuna | Haldwani

The State Government is  going to develop the historic Almora jail where leaders like Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, GB Pant, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan to name a few had stayed during their freedom struggle days, as a museum.

Therefore, to give a concrete shape to this ambitious project, a new jail would be constructed in Almora to shift the inmates from this historic  Almora jail, as the officials concerned of the State Government said.

Efforts are going on to identify land at a place near Syalidhar in Almora to construct a new jail, further said the officials concerned. And as soon as the land is identified, construction works would be started on the new jail project, they added.

The State Government and for that matter the Chief Minister, Harish Rawat, is keen to preserve the historic Almora jail as a heritage site in the form of a museum.

Since leaders like Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, G B Pant, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan to name a few had stayed in this jail during the freedom struggle, so this Almora jail assumes huge significance.

That is why the State Government is keen to develop this jail in Almora as a museum. There are presently about 109 inmates.

In the meanwhile, the State Government has also asked the officials concerned of the Almora district administration to expedite the land identification process so that the new jail could be constructed timely and the present Almora jail could be developed as a museum.
