The local Meteorological Centre on Thursday predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in most parts of coastal Odisha in the next 24 hours under the influence of a cyclonic storm, 'Komen,' in the Bay of Bengal.
"The deep depression over northeast Bay of Bengal, which moved northwestwards during the last nine hours, has intensified into a cyclonic storm 'Komen' and lay centred at about 300 km in the east-southeast of Kolkata at 10 am today," said a Press release issued by the Met Centre.
The release further said the cyclonic storm after its landfall would move west-northwestwards and weaken gradually.
"Under its influence, rain or thundershower would occur at many places over Odisha with heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over coastal Odisha and adjoining Mayurbhanj district during the next 24 hours," the release said.
In view of the cyclonic storm, danger signal number five (D-V) has been hoisted at all ports in the State.
The Met department warned fishermen not to venture into the sea during the period as squally surface wind at speed reaching 50-60 kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph would prevail along and off the coast making sea condition very rough.
