Flood-lights to shoo anti-social elements

Monday, 30 November 2015 | Parvinder Bhatia | Jamshedpur

After restricting entry of vehicles at Jubilee Park utility company Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company (JUSCO) and district administration have started taking further steps to ensure safety at most sought after public place. As a measure to enhance security measures, JUSCO has started installing flood-lights in the green and convenient corners, which were being exploited by lovers to carry out  ‘obscene acts’.

The utility company has already set up about half-a-dozen additional lamp-posts across the sprawling Jubilee Park and is identifying more spots to install the same.

Notably, after sunset the atmosphere of Jubilee Park gets completely changed.  The whole park becomes a heaven for the lovers who turn up with their girlfriends to seek corners for spending their time in the darkness.

Sources  revealed that before the time when park was shut three hours earlier and installing halogen lights, the  officials from the district administration, JUSCO and Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee had conducted survey of the park from evening till the 11 pm when park  remains closed.

“After the survey the two important decisions were taken on Jubilee Park,” said a senior official in the district administration on condition of anonymity.  He pointed out the change of timings of park’s opening and closure will not affect the morning walkers as it will remain opened from 5 am like earlier.

Senior superintendent of police, Anoop T Mathew said during winters it gets dark after 5.30 pm.  He said that keeping the rush in view, the district police also ensures that adequate police men and police women are posted in the park for the visitors’ security.

A police official said that the idea is to keep tab against those couples who are creating obscenity openly, much to the displeasure and embarrassment of the people visiting the park for spending some quality time. There are also reports of anti-social elements capturing the lovers on their mobile phone cameras and blackmailing them later on.

“We have decided to continue with the drive and from the next time we may prosecute those who will be nabbed while creating obscenity in the park, which is a public place,” the officer said.

According to a private security guard posted at the Jubilee Park, the girls come to the park with faces wrapped with a cloth by sitting pillion rider with her boy-friend who put on a helmet.   Many of the girls come with school bags, indicating that they are students. A police official advised the youths not to indulge in obscenity in public places and warned them that police personnel have been deputed at all public places to keep a watch on their movements.
