Emphasis should be on secure Digital India: Pradhan

Wednesday, 30 September 2015 | Vivek Punj | Ranchi

Rise in incidents of cyber crime can be translated into more job opportunities for the ones qualified and willing to fight them.

Gathered to discuss ‘Cyber Security and Entrepreneurship’ this Tuesday, experts and law and order officials concurred that the need for cyber security professionals has grown proportionately with rapid expansion of cyber space.

“In today’s time, individuals’ digital identity surpasses their physical ones, and the former can be misused quite easily. The digital space is being misused by many; recently it was used by some to fan communal tension in the city. In this light, we need a capable workforce to fight crimes of digital nature,” said Additional Director General (Operations) SN Pradhan.

“When rumour-mongers were using the social media to spread panic in the city, I was thinking as a police officer,” he added.

“Bulk of information in cyber space has grown a great deal, and like any other system, this growth has resulted in disorder in digital space. This disorder leads to cyber crimes. As the consequences of cyber crimes manifest into the physical world too, cyber security is crucial to ensure one’s well-being in real world,” said former Ranchi University Vice Chancellor AA Khan.

He further added, “Those committing these crimes are as talented as those working to control them. What we need is a platform in cyber space where both groups of talented technocrats can come to use their talents for creative purposes.”

“From financial fraud to terrorist activities, everything is going on in the cyber space. The time is not far when wars will not be fought at land, air or sea, but the third dimension, which is digital in nature. To be one-up in the cyber world, we first need to spread awareness about the threats that lurk there, especially to those who are not well-versed with it,” said Colonel (Retd.) B. Prasad while addressing the gathering.

“By 2020, it has been estimated that around five lakh cyber security experts will be needed to tackle the threats posed by the digital world, but this number will surely be surpassed. Every major corporate house is focussing on cyber security now. So the young generation, which is digital native, should enter the field of cyber security as entrepreneurs. This sector has immense scope in the coming decade,” Pradhan said.

He further said, “We are on the way to become Digital India, but an inseparable factor of this is security to the Digital Indians for a good life. Digital presence is forever and so should be secured. Otherwise this asset will soon become a liability.”
