Sonia Rajinder Singh, wife of late Maj Gen Rajinder Singh ‘Sparrow’, turned hundred on Tuesday. She is the wife of one of the most decorated officers ever to have served in the Indian Army and the proud mother of two accomplished Military Generals namely, Maj Gen MS Shergill, and lt Gen TS Shergil.
Gen Rajinder Singh ‘Sparrow’, was awarded the first Maha Vir Chakra for his command of 7th light Cavalry during the epic battle of Zojila in 1947-48 Indo - Pak War. He won his second MVC as GOC, 1 Armoured Division for his gallant action during the 1965 Indo–Pak War in the Sialkot Sector.
The General was not only on iconic military leader, but also an able Parliamentarian and a renowned public figure. After hanging his uniform, Gen Sparrow served as a lok Sabha MP representing Jalandhar and was the Minister for Agriculture in Punjab. Sonia Rajinder Singh is currently residing with her elder son in Jalandhar. On the occasion of her 100th birthday, she was felicitated at her residence by her family members as well as well-wishers from the Army and Civil Fraternity.
