A famous Congress activist Ashok Banerjee (65) was killed in a road mishap at Ghatshila on Friday morning. Peeved over the incident the local residents and political activists set up a blockade on the NH-33, demanding compensation for the family members.
Banerjee, who was a resident of Ghatshila town, was killed as the bike he was riding was hit by a trailer near Fuldungri between Ghatshila and Galudih. The trailer which was coming from Jamshedpur hit Banerjee head-on and run over him. The victim died on the spot. The protesters demanded `20 lakh compensation from the administration as the mishap took place due to poor condition of NH-33.
Soon after senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Pradeep Balmuchu arrived at the scene and tried to convince the gathering. But finally, East Singhbhum deputy commissioner, Amitabh Kaushal, made a telephonic contact with the protesters who lifted the blockade. Officer-in-charge, Ghatshila police station, Bir Singh Munda confirmed that a 65-year-old biker was killed on the spot on being run over by a speeding trailer.
