'Community-based disaster response is essential'

Wednesday, 30 September 2015 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

The IAG Odisha in collaboration with the ActionAid organised a State-level event for sharing a citizen’s report on Phailin-2013 and tool kit for women-led disaster preparedness plan here last week.

The aim of the event is to release a report on the responses to the Phailin-2013 that has captured the voice of communities in Ganjam and sharing the experiences of planning and executing women-led preparedness plan in the district

Civil society members, Government and community leaders came together to discuss and debate on the report and community-based disaster preparedness plan.

Special Relief Commissioner GVV Sharma said “although the Government received accolades for its rescue work during Phailin, we should not be complacent about it”. He said he will go through the citizen’s report and endeavour to address the concerns which are mentioned therein.

ActionAid Bhubaneswar Regional Manager and IAG Odisha vice-chairperson Debabrat Patra said capturing the citizen’s voices especially of poor, marginalised, women, PWDs and other vulnerable groups is extremely important after a disaster to improve the quality of disaster response in future.
