Chhattisgarh strives for toilets in every house

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Swachh Bharat' campaign is being carried on a mission mode in all the 169 urban areas of Chhattisgarh under the State Government's 'har ghar nal aur har ghar toilet', officials said claimed on Saturday.

The authorities are providing subsidies to the citizens who do not have toilets in their residences. About Rs20,000 is spent on constructing a toilet and Rs18,000 subsidy is being given to the beneficiary.

Chief Minister Raman Singh has instructed officers to inspect and survey the houses and encourage the occupants to build toilets. The survey work is almost complete and the base line is the 2011 Census. A survey is conducted in 2 lakh 41 thousand houses in 169 urban regions.

About 3,000 toilets have been constructed in private residences. The campaign to construct toilets is being carried along with Bhagirathi Nal-Jal Yojana.

Free tap connections are provided under the scheme. The beneficiary has to pay Rs60 per month for this special tap connection and water supply.

Urban Administration and Development Minister Amar Agrawal said that about Rs3.41 cr had been spent on converting more than four thousand toilets into modern ones. The State had sanctioned Rs147 crore 12 lakh to construct 887 community toilets.
