The consultant neurologist at Choitharam Hospital Indore Dr Neha Rai here informed about the stroke, which is no affecting even the people of young age.
Dr Rai, DM Neurology said stroke is a serious life threatening medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to a part of a brain is cut off. Strokes are a medical emergency and urgent treatment is essential because the sooner a person receives treatment for a stroke, the less damage is likely to happen.
The signs and symptoms of a stroke vary from person to person but usually begin suddenly. As a different part of brain control different part of body. The main symptoms of a stroke can be remembered with the word FAST- Face-Arms-Speech-Time. The face may be dropped on one side, the person may not be able to smile or their mouth or eye may have dropped.
She informed that other symptoms and signs may include complete paralysis of one side of the body, sudden loss or blurring of vision, dizziness, confusion, difficulty understanding what others are saying, problems with balance and co-ordination, difficulty in swallowing, a sudden and severe headache. Strokes happen due to the problem with the blood supply to brain.
like all organs the brain needs the oxygen and nutrients provided by the blood to function properly, if the supply of the blood is restricted or stopped. Brain cells begin to die. This can lead to brain injury, disability and possibly death. The risk section belong to the people of advancing age, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and smoking, alcohol and drug abuse. The measures include diet, change in lifestyle and medications and exercise.
