Five people lost their lives when the bus they were travelling in fell into a gorge near Shivpuri in Tehri Garhwal district on Sunday. The ill-fated bus of Garhwal Motors Owners Union ltd (GMOU ltd) was travelling from Rudraprayag to Rishikesh when around 11.30 am it collided head on with a car travelling from opposite direction. The names of the dead are Kaptan Singh a resident of Pauri district, Kadir Hussain resident of Reasi of Jammu and Kashmir, Ramesh Negi resident of Pauri, Jai Prakash Barmada a resident of Pauri and Rajni of Muni Ki Reti. Six of the seriously injured passengers are admitted in HIHT Jollygrant and are reportedly out of danger while others were admitted in government hospital, Rishikesh. The injured include a Colombian resident Alexandra.
The Station Officer of Muni Ki Reti, Abbal Singh Rawat informed that 33 passengers were travelling in the bus. He said that the police team arrived on the accident spot within ten minutes of the accident and a rescue operation was launched for the stranded passengers. The villagers and the personnel associated with river rafting camps also helped the police teams in the rescue operation.
The Tehri Police presented the humane face of police when it returned a bag containing Rs one lakh to the relatives of its owner Shurveer Singh Panwar who was injured in the accident. The police handed over the bag to the son of Panwar at Muni Ki Reti police station. This act of police is being appreciated widely. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Mohatir Mohasin declared a cash reward of `1,000 to the local policemen. The Inspector General of Garhwal range Sanjay Gunjyal too has announced a cash reward of `10,000 for the local policemen.
