On an assurance from Transport Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi over evolving an automatic fare adjustment mechanism, the Odisha Private Bus Owners’ Association on Saturday decided to postpone its proposed strike on June 5 till August 1.
In the absence of an automatic fare adjustment mechanism in the State, effective and timely changes in the bus fares due to frequent fuel price fluctuations are not possible, giving jitters to both the commuters and the bus operators.
The assurance came at a meeting between the association office-bearers and the transport officials in the presence of the minister. That apart, it was also decided in the meeting that the buses would be painted in different colours according to their categories.
Association general secretary Debendra Kumar Sahu said more than 15,000 private buses ply on the city roads daily.
The Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) also runs 450 buses in the city every day.
