Blocked since a week, Joshimath-Malari road adds to people's woes

Monday, 31 August 2015 | Pradeep Bhandari | Joshimath

Those living in the border area here are facing problems securing ration and essential commodities with the Joshimath-Malari border road being blocked for about one week now.

Officials of the Border Roads Organisation have stated that efforts are being made to reopen this border road for traffic soon.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Joshimath-Malari road has been blocked for traffic since August 24. At present, work is also being undertaken for widening of this border road.

The road is blocked by rock debris near Malari. Problems are also being faced in the removal of the heavy rock debris blocking the road for about a week now.

The delay in reopening of this border road to traffic is causing problems especially for members of the Bhotia tribe who stay in this high altitude border area for six months a year and the army men posted at the border.

Officials of the BRO state that heavy debris from a broken cliff are posing problems in reopening of the road but they add that the road will be cleared for traffic soon.

In the meanwhile, the people living in this area have no other option but to cover the distance on foot, at times carrying loads.

Since there is no alternate route the people are walking over the debris blocking the border road.
