Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national vice-president laxmi Kanta Chawla on Monday hit out at her own Government in Punjab, led by SAD-BJP coalition, for its failure to rein in private schools across the State from minting money.Chawla, known for raising public issues even against her own Government, has alleged that the State Government neither has any control over the private schools nor at the private hospitals.
She maintained that if the government improves the standards of education in the government schools, the student and their parents could be saved from the harassment these private institutes were causing to them. The former state Cabinet Minister maintained that even though the Right to Education (RTE) was given to everyone on papers, but its implementation is almost negligible.
“The private schools not only charge huge amount of fees, but they also ask the parents of the students to buy books, uniforms etc from specific shops through which these schools get huge commission,” alleged Chawla, adding that this put extra monetary burden on the parents. The BJP leader said that even the students, already studying in the schools, were asked to submit admissions fees, along with funds under many other heads. She urged the state Education Minister to at least instruct the private schools to allow the students to buy books or uniform from any shop, and not only those recommended by the schools.
