Abandoned by the cruel owners at the sprawling Dhalpur Maidan, the venue of International Dushera Festival of Kulu, to starve to death, 66-year old Kamla hailing from a sleepy village Dhughi lag in the hilly terrain 15 miles from Kulu town has emerged as a fond mother of a cluster of stray cows.
The hill crowd of Kulu had been closely watching the old and feeble lady carrying bundles of green grass and feeding the cows at Dhalpur Maidan every day. It was her daily routine to go to the forests, cut grass and carry on her back. She trekked a distance of 15 km to Kulu. This news spread in the entire town like a wild fire.
The people now come to Dhalpur to witness the scene how the old Kamla, the "mother of cows" carries big bundles of grass after negotiating a long hilly distance of 15 km.
The mute and meek cows warmly reciprocated the deep love of Kamla for them. They used to assemble at the exact point where Kamla used to unfold the bundles of grass. Many cows licked her hands and looked at her with ineffable love. Their silent expressions spoke volumes about their feelings.
Her whole day was spent in this exercise. She had also other members of the family who worked hard to eke out a bare living. Kamla had cherished to realize her only mission of caring for the hungry cows.
While many watched her and went home, there was one reporter of a vernacular daily, Balkrishan, who went deep into the secret of how Kamla suddenly became the salvager of cows. He grew closer to her and she ventilated her deep pain. She revealed that since her childhood she loved animals, cows in particular. “My heart bled when I saw cows dying on the roadside in snowy roads.”
Sometime back her young son died in a road accident. It broke her. An elderly person consoled her. He said, “Feed grass to cows. It gives peace to the souls of the dead.” This appealed her and she is now wholeheartedly devoting herself to the service of the cows.
Kamla is now a happy woman engaged in the service of the hapless cows and other stray animals abandoned by the owners to die.
