Establishing that an attempt was made on the life of Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) secretary Asirbad Behera, the police arrested five persons on Sunday and forwarded them to court. The accused had tried to kill Behera hurling bombs at his house at Madhusudan Nagar on Friday after he apparently had refused to yield to an extortion threat.
The Bidanasi police arrested Gyana Ranjan Bastia (26), Ajit Bastia (20), Bikash Bastia (22), Sk Famim (36) and Sk Tausif (19) under Sections 307, 120-B, 109 and 34 of IPC and Section 3 of Explosives Substances Act. Four of them were earlier detained and interrogated in this connection, said Bidanasi Police Inspector AK Rout.
It may be mentioned that Behera’s house had also been attacked a week ago, and surprisingly, the high-profile sports administrator had not brought this to the notice of the police. Even after Friday’s incident, Behera too has maintained a sordid silence by simply saying he has no enemies.
