Beware of thief if you are booking Kalinga Stadium!

Bhubaneswar: Beware if you are booking dormitories, guest rooms and staying in the hostels in the Kalinga Sports Complex has become a target of miscreants with frequent cases of theft of mobiles and other valuables. The recent incident took place on Tuesday miscreants allegedly broke through a dormitory occupied by Sports Authority of India (SAI) East Zone hockey team and looted cell phones and cash besides taking away other documents.

Believe or not such incident would definitely dent the image of the state and the stadium which is one among the most sough destinations in the State for national tournaments.

“We have a team of 18 members and were staying at the dormitory of the stadium. On Tuesday morning we were in the match and when we returned to our dormitory we found the lock of the room broken. We were also shocked to find around 3 mobile phones and cash worth Rs 10,000 missing from our room,” alleged Jharkhand hockey player.

Sources said that the miscreants most often target dormitories occupied by players outside the State. The sports complex built in an area of 60 acres is a multipurpose stadium with facilities for hockey, football, swimming, tennis, basketball and athletics. The stadium hosts a number of tournaments of State and national level.

Stadium authorities blame it on the inadequacy of security guards in the stadium premises for such incidents. “We have around 20 security guards for the vast area. Majority of them are deployed at the 10 entry and exit gates in the sports complex. Besides there is no restriction on entry of outsiders in to the stadium as it is a public property,” said a stadium official.

Earlier in this month miscreants allegedly broke through a dormitory occupied by Under 19 Rugby team of Kerala and looted around 10 cell phones and cash worth Rs 25000 besides taking away other documents.

Sources in the stadium said that this is the seventh such incident in the stadium in last three months. Earlier miscreants had committed theft of mobile phones and other valuables from the hostel of College of Physical Education a fortnight ago.
