2003 Amritsar sex racket: Key witness kills self

Tuesday, 31 March 2015 | PNS | Amritsar

A cable operator, who was a prime witness in the 2003 Amritsar sex racket case and had attempted suicide two days ago, died here on Monday. Victim Jaswinder Singh Jassi of a local cable network had consumed some poisonous substance at a hotel room on March 28 in the presence of chairman and a member of Telecom Dispute settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) and other judges following which he was hospitalised.

He died in the hospital on Monday, police said. Police have booked Managing Directors (MD) of a cable network, Sarabjit Singh Raju and Pritpal Singh lalli, under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of IPC. Raids were being conducted to arrest the culprits, police said. A suicide note, written in Punjabi presumably in his own handwriting, having his signatures, his thumb impression and even the stamp of his firm, has been recovered from his possession, police had said.

Jassi was a prime witness in a case involving Raju which is going on in CBI court at Patiala. In his suicide note, Jassi had said that he was being exploited by cable trade big-wigs and they had taken over most of the part of his business due to which his wife also suffered an attack of paralysis.

He had alleged that Raju had taken over his business of cable and he was under such financial burden that he could not even get the roof of his house repaired. His suicide note had named three people including his brother-partner lalli, a councilor from ward no 4 in Amritsar, Sarabjit Singh Raju and Gurdip Singh of Jujhar Transport, police said.
