Kingsman: The Secret Service
Staring: Colin Firth, Samuel l Jackson, Mark Strong, Taron Egerton, Michael Caine
Rated: 7/10
Colin Firth fans are bound to fall in love with him all over again. Take a James Bond movie, add a few moments of hilarity to it and some great acting from Firth and Samuel l Jackson of course, can’t forget the presence of Michael Caine and give it a good shake. What you will get is a great spy spoof film that takes you on a ride that has ups and downs keeping you engrossed and entertained all through.
That Firth is brilliant as an actor has already been proved in The King’s Speech. In Kingsman... he has proved yet again why he is so good. Attired in an impeccable custom-tailored suit and an umbrella in his hand — it is his choice of weapon that will put some of the gadgets one sees in a Bond movie to shame — Firth tackles a room full of goons without flinching or getting a crease in his suit. As the modern-day version of a knight for a secret service organisation, he is ultra cool and carries himself with an elegance that only an Englishman can achieve and not look haughty.
And it is only possible for Samuel l Jackson to give a performance where he doesn’t come second best. As Valentine, the billionaire who is out to save Mother Earth from total annihilation by killing millions of people, he is unlike a villain one gets to see. With a slight lisp and an aversion to blood, he comes with a few idiosyncrasies.
Take for example this speech that he makes justifying his killings — ‘In order to save the world, Noah built an ark and took animals two-by-two. And the order came from God. What is it that I am doing wrong’. So while the film may have some over the top violence that resembles Kill Bill series, it pays homage in its own way to the spy-thrillers. Director Matthew Vaughn has taken a rather simple story and made it into an extraordinary movie.
Based on comic book series written by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, Kingsman... offers plenty of thrills and moments of hilarity making it a must see.
